It looks like it's going to be the election
that will never end. Now, Palm Beach county has decided
to keep Florida in the spotlight in the U.S. Presidential
election by ordering a hand recount of the entire county, not
just some representative sample as had been suggested earlier.
Naturally, there was a huge outcry from
the Republicans, who don't trust what's going on down
there. And probably with good reason. The man at
the head of the Democratic campaign has the Daly name, one
that's synonymous with voting questions from another era.
It's going to provide at least another
week of endless babbling for the television talking heads and
who knows where it will go from here.
I submit that most Americans don't trust
what's going on there, but have also grown tired of the whole
saga and are ready to move on with their lives. In the
end, I believe most would say, "flip a coin" to
select the President. Whoever gets the final nod is going to
have his work cut out for him and will probably be a one-termer
anyway.
We inherently don't trust politicians
and when shenanigans like those going on in Florida are
brought to light, it erodes our trust even more. I am
sure these same things have gone on the past, but it hasn't
been close enough to be a factor and therefore never saw the
light of day.
Enough all ready.
There probably won't be any recount
in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Bobby Labonte and car
owner Joe Gibbs won their first Winston Cup title today when
Labonte finished fourth in Homestead, Florida.
Congratulations Bobby and Joe.
I am fortunate to know both of these
men. I remember Booby from the time he was about 10
years old and tagged along with older brother Terry as Terry
was cutting his teeth on Winston Cup racing. Bobby has
developed in quite a racer and gentelman and will be a great
spokesman for the sport. He can now go to the final race
next week in Atlanta
and have some fun, not having to worry about the Winston
Cup. He's been rather successful at Atlanta, so it
wouldn't be a surprise to see him win the final race of the
2000 season. Terry has won a pair of Winston Cup titles
and the two have now become the first brothers to win Winston
Cup championships.
I met Joe Gibbs when I managed the Winston
Cup program for R. J. Reynodls, and everything you hear about
Joe is true. He's quite the gentleman and to this day,
goes out of his way to speak when I see him around the race
track.
The sport is honored to have these two
men and their team representing it as champions.
It was a winning weekend in Homestead
for Joe Gibbs. Labonte won the national title and his
other driver, Tony Stewart won the race. Talk about a
time for celebrating.
I think I can take some of the credit
for making Barbara Thompson [barbara@ttgnet.com]
a Winston Cup race fan, so I wasn't surprised to see this note
from her shortly after the conclusion of today's race.
I assume since you are
posting your page you are not in Homestead, Fla. I am
glad to see Bobby and Joe
bring his team to a Winston Cup Championship. I don't think
it will be the last time he or Joe Gibbs experience winning
the Championship. They are both a class act. We'll see if he
can bring Tony Stewart to the maturity level it takes to win
the Cup since he already has the
talent.
There are still some
big battles going on behind him with racers jockeying for
positions within the top nine finishers. It should still
make for an exciting race next weekend in Atlanta regardless
of the Championship being decided.
Except, they better
watch out. Earnhardt may demand a recount.
I was originally scheduled to go to
Homestead this weekend, but got my business taken care of last
week in Phoenix, so I didn't make the trip. I spoke with
several folks down there over the weekend and it sounds like
they'll have weather shock when they return home from today's
80º temperatures in South Florida.
I agree that Joe Gibbs runs a class
outfit and that he'll have his work cut out
"breaking" Tony Stewart. Atlanta should be
interesting as the guys try to solidify their position in the
final points.
Earnhardt made a good run for his
eighth championship this year, but I would very surprised to
see him add another trophy and top Richard Petty before he
retires. Might be a little prejudice on my part there.
