Police in the Philippines say they have chased
down a suspect in the I Love You virus, but have pulled back,
wanting to gather more evidence before making an arrest. I
also thought I saw somewhere today where the suspect may be a
female computer programmer, but I can't remember where that was
now.
The Washington Post provided an interesting look
at the virus, including:

Have you missed me?
It's been one of those weeks. At work we
have been working on a new project for the The Winston race at
Charlotte and everything with this deal seems to be delayed.
On top of the delays I took a trip down to Charlotte last week to
check on the new space for this display and found out the
footprint we were being allowed was not what we originally
thought. That meant several days of intensive redesigning
and more trip to Charlotte.
To add fuel to the fire, this was also the week
that Suzy had planned a trip to Pennsylvania. That meant Mr.
Mom duties for me...getting the kids to bed and up at the right
time, fixing lunches, taxi duty, etc. I needed to be home
early in the afternoon to meet the bus, which meant I needed to
bug out of work early every day and this unfortunately was not the
week to bug out.
Everything worked out, Suzy arrived home safely on
Wednesday night and I promptly fell asleep on the couch early
yesterday.
The kids were glad to see their mother
return. As Katie puts it, "we're used to you traveling,
not mommy." I think that was a good thing she said.
I was saddened this afternoon to learn of the
death of Adam Petty as a result of a racing accident at
Loudon, New Hampshire.
I had known Adam since he entered this world and
marveled as he grow threw youthful exuberance and into a fine
young man. Adam was going to be a chip of his Granddad's
block. Everything people are saying about him on the news
today is true. He was a gracious and fun loving young
man. Our condolences to the entire Petty family.

I am going to do something today that most men
HATE.
Sometime last year the Concord Mills shopping mall
opened near the entrance to Lowe's Motor Speedway in
Charlotte. This is not your typical retail shopping
mall. It's one of those mega malls chocked full of national
off-price chains, outlets if you will. There must be close
to a million square feet under roof.
Anyway, Suzy began planning a trip there for today
a couple of months ago. Had to fit it into her busy calendar
you know. The kids and I are going along for a (at a loss
for the right word here) experience. I am sure it will be an
all day affair.
There could be something good to come out of this
trip. The kids and I still need to grab a Mother's day gift
for Suzy.
I guess I am going to have to get busy again on
that Linux box. Notice arrived in the mail this week soliciting
my interest in Time-Warner's digital cable service, which means
they're probably ready to start pumping out cable modems in my
area, finally. And believe it or not, I did not call the
moment the sales flyer arrived.
I've got to develop a strategy for deploying cable
modem service, if that's what I really want to do. I wish
BellSouth would get off their duffs and deploy ADSL in my
area. I would rather chose that service, which I think would
serve me better in the long run.
Anyway, if I decide to go the cable modem route in
the next couple of weeks I think I will have the service installed
on a Win98 box, then get the Linux machine up and running and then
move the NIC card with the cable modem attached over to Linux,
where I can share the connection with the rest of my
network. Sounds simple, but I know it will not come off that
easy. In addition, I would really like to talk the cable
company out of a static IP address, but that probably won't
happen.
To get around the lease timing out on dynamic DNS,
a friend of mine at work who has cable modem service is running a
Linux box with something called DynoDNS, which as I understand it,
keeps his lease alive and allows him to run his own web
server. I haven't even begun to look for DynoDNS. More
on this later.
As I was cleaning up my email last night I
noticed a warning from Microsoft about the ILOVE YOU
virus. This message was not dispatched until Tuesday of this
week, almost a full week after the virus began striking.
Certainly on Thursday of last week the virus was major news here
in the USA. How can it take a company like Microsoft, who is
supposedly the leader in the software business, this long to post
such a message? Especially when the bug is aimed at one of
the major pieces of their software suite. At first I thought
the notice was saved for their weekly Office update, but upon
taking another look I see this this disclaimer at the very
beginning of the message: "This special edition of
the Office News Service is to alert you to a new e-mail virus that
has the potential to affect users running Microsoft Outlook."
There's no excuse for this giant to wait this long to send out
a warning email about a virus that was invading their email
product. Microsoft would have been better off to ignore
that the virus was invading Outlook.
For those of you who can sing (O can't), here's
a new jingle for you, sung to the tune of the Oscar Meyer hot
dog advertising jingle:
| His baloney
has a first name, It's "I-did-not-inhale."
His baloney has a
second name, "I-wasn't-getting-tail."
Oh, He loves to sling
it every day....
The White House people
all just saaaaaaaay....

It looks like Intel may have let the cat out of
the bag when they recalled
faulty motherboards this week. Included in information on the
recall was the revelation that not many motherboards with the new
RAMBUS memory device (somewhere around 500,000) have been shipped
since their introduction last November. This means the
recall won't hurt their bottom line too much. However, it
also means one of their latest creations is not doing very well
and this could also have some impact on the bottom line.
Could this message have been meant for
me? Amongst all of the talk about memory chips,
motherboards, hard drives and such on the TechWeb site is a story reminding
us no to overdo any exercise program. Hopefuly I am
falling into the category of not overdoing it.
