Things didn't go exactly as planned this morning
(nothing major) or I wouldn't be sitting at the computer at 0330
writing this note.
Katie had to meet her fellow Moravian band members
at 1:15 AM at the church so we had planned for her to get to be
early, but after dinner she had wanted to copy some of her music
and glue it together so she wouldn't have to fumble with the music
book while playing in the darkness. I used my scanner as a
photo copier to accomplish this. Originally we were going to
affix these small pieces of music to some cardboard, (the kind
that comes in a shirt when it returns from the laundry, Suzy
found some of the cardboard sheets and then I had the bright idea
that we could take the strips of music, glue then on the
pages the size of a bandsmen's music book and laminate the
sheets. Suzy got out the laminating machine while Katie and
I prepared the sheets and this is one idea that worked
great. Katie was now equipped with four small laminated
sheets and would not have to flip through the music book. I
hope it's working out for her. I told her I thought the
other band members would be jealous!
We then had to take a few minutes to dye some eggs
for the Easter bunny and Katie was finally able to head off to bed
at about 10 PM, some three hours later than we had originally
planned.
I had briefly thought about accompanying Suzy to
take her to the church around 12:30 this morning, but quickly came
to my senses. I, too, hit the sack, setting my alarm for
0430.
I awoke about 0330 for a restroom break and
noticed that Suzy was not in bed, so I decided to see what she was
doing. I found her in the basement watching some MSNBC rerun
and asked what she was doing and why she was watching this
crap. "There's nothing on but paid programming this
time of day" was her response. I wonder who normally
watches this junk? She offered that a couple hours of sleep
would have been worse than no sleep. I agreed and decided to
go ahead and stay awake myself, noting that by the time I got back
to sleep it would be time to get up and head downtown. We're
going to leave the house around 0445 and stake out our place for
the sunrise service. We then all plan to come home and
CRASH.

Our company celebrates a long Easter holiday, so I
also had today off. It'll be tought going back
tomorrow after a long weekend. However, I did get back in
the swing by take both kids to their separate schools this
morning. It takes two trips. I head out first with
Katie around 7:05 AM and then come back home and load Andrew up at
8:20 AM. Their two schools are in opposite directions and
our house just happens to sit about half-way between the two.
Suzy and I then spent today running some
errands. One of these trips included dragging her into a
bike shop to see if we could find something she might be inclined
to ride. I have this dream or scheme. If we have a garage
full of bikes, then maybe we can enjoy this passtime as a
family. Currently for our family of four there are
seven bikes, two cars and lawnmower taking up residence in a
garage that was already too small.
We were successful and she came home with a bike
she thinks she will ride with us (me and the kids) and in fact we
were out tooling around the cul-de-sac when Katie's bus arrived.
There has been some mild protest, however, from
Suzy. We live in a very hilly neighborhood, so she has
informed me that I shouldn't expect to see her riding the hills in
the neighborhood. This means to enjoy this family time
together we'll either spend our time together riding around in
circles in the cul-de-sac or we'll be loading up the bikes and
heading for one of the flatter greenway or bike trails in
town. This is going to take some work..er, planning, I can
tell, but in the end it will be worth it. I hope.
I see our grand and glorious government is
flexing its muscle once again, this time leaking the story they
plan to ask for the breakup of Microsoft. Can't leave
well enough alone can they? Haven't they learned enough from
past mistakes. All that will happen here is that Mr. Bill
Gates will become richer. I assuming here that he'll be a
majority stock holder in all of the Baby Microsoft's.
Of the hundreds of emails I receive each
week (I know, I am on too many listservs) I sporadically get a
mailing with tips for optimizing Windows or Internet Explorer or
the like. However, if you really want to think about
optimizing your Windows system you might want to check out the
offering by fellow daynoter Dave Farquhar.
Dave is the author of the O'Rielly book Optimizing
Windows for Games, Graphics and Multimedia and can be found at
the
Silicon Underground.
Dave understands that optimizing a system is a
very painstaking task and he attempts to to take some of the pain
out of this process. He even gives you a hint on how to get
rid of Internet Explorer if that is your lifelong dream. Are
you clowns at the DOJ listening?
If you think you might be interested in Dave's
book, save
yourself a couple of bucks when you order it online from
Amazon.com
The weather forecasters are telling us that we
might be in for another interesting hurricane season in
2000. Over the weekend The
Charlotte Observer offered this chart with hurricane
names for the years 2000-2004. I hope we don't get very
far down the list

My friend Bob
Thompson and I have been having some friendly banter back and
forth about my sudden decision to exercise at the ripe old age of
45 (well, almost 45). I had been telling Bob about my walks
and even that I had been peddling away on the stationary exercise
bike...the same exercise that for the better part of six years had
been a clothes rack or plant stand in our basement. I am
sure almost everyone can relate to that. When asked why the
sudden interest in losing a few pounds and exercising for the
first time since a kid the answer was simple. My sudden burst of
energy has been prompted by my ever growing spare tire. To
which Bob questoined:
"So why are you torturing
yourself in your old age? A spare tire is nature's way of
telling you to slow down and take it easy."
My response:
The trouble is I have been taking it too
easy!
Now a couple month's doesn't make a lifestyle
change....we'll see what happens down the road.
This dude is definitely not his father.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is being featured in either the current or a
future issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Seems like the
younger Earnhardt was a fan of the late Kurt Cobain of the group
Nirvana. Little E also handles a mean set of drumsticks I'm
told.
