I'm making progress. As I started to update
this page, I remembered to change both the referrer page as well
as the title on this page. I hope when you are viewing this
page it says "Week of March 26, 2000." I haven't
always remembered to make the changes at the beginning of a week
recently.
Andrew and I returned safely this weekend
from a visit with Grandmother. We arrived home about three
minutes ahead of Suzy and Katie, who had headed off to Laurel
Ridge, a camp in the North Carolina Blue Ridge mountains, with
about 10 other pre-teens for the weekend. Suzy was glad to
get home and enjoy a "real" shower. I am always
amazed when she does this camping thing with Katie and
Andrew. Not me, thank you.
As we were heading north in Virginia on Friday,
the car radio was tuned to a local Winston-Salem station and we
heard the interesting news that the local Clerk of Courts had been
arrested that afternoon for alleged embezzlement. The FBI
and the State Bureau of Investigation came into his office late
Friday afternoon and hauled him away in handcuffs. It's
going to be interesting to find out more about what's going on as
this story unfolds in the next few weeks. Before you ask,
yes he's a Republican. Here's a link to the story
in Saturday's Winston-Salem Journal on this subject.
This is cruise line I want the next time
Suzy and I hit the high seas. I say that like we go "cruising"
all of the time. Actually, our last cruise was our first and
I have vowed that I want to return. The first cruise for us was
our honeymoon and we selected all we could afford at that time, a
ride on the Carnival Cruise Line's Carnivale. If my
memory serves me correct, this ship seemed like it may have been
one of the early diesel powered cruise liners. It was old
and did not have many amenities and has since been relegated to
three day gambling hops to the Bahamas. There was no 110v power in
the state rooms and I remember Suzy had to go to a common area to
use her hair dryer.
It's my guess that Cruise lines have come a long
way since our experience. And with the news that ships
are becoming internet friendly, makes me want to hit the high
seas again even more. Maybe we can sneak away for our 20th
anniversary, which will be here in a couple of years. Don't
expect me to keep this page update from the ship, however!
Word over the weekend is the U.S. Department of
Justice was not
that impressed with Microsoft's attempt to settle
their anti-trust suit with the U.S. Government. I guess
Microsoft was trying to get things finished up before the Judge
actually says what anti-trust laws they are guilty of
violating. From what I read, Microsoft's olive branch had a
few too many thorns and probably didn't address their alleged
monopoly.
Ernie Irvan must think there's a black cloud following
him around. Irvan was seriously injured in a early morning
practice accident at Michigan when I was Winston Cup manager for
RJR. He was within an eye's blink of death for several days,
but eventually came back to drive Winston Cup race cars
again. Then he has another accident and the doctors strongly
recommend he retire from driving, which he did. He retired
last summer. And now comes the news that his home
has sustained heavy fire damage while he was on
vacation. This poor guy can't seem to catch a break.

Just a quick update this morning before I head off
to Dallas/Ft. Worth for this week's NASCAR Winston Cup
event.
After hearing the devastating news of the Texas
tornados yesterday one of the first things I did was to check to
see if our hotel was still standing. We stay at the
Worthington Hotel in downtown Ft. Worth and the news reports
seemed rather dim concerning Ft. Worth's downtown area. The
hotel says they up and running with no damage other than maybe a
couple of windows being blown out. Now the challenge may
become just getting there.
| Question: |
Why is Bill Clinton so reluctant to decide
the fate of Elian Gonzalez? |
| Answer: |
Because last time he made a decision
about where to put a Cuban, he was almost impeached. |
And speaking of President Clinton. The
Infobeat news service reported yesterday that he "committed
a criminal violation of the Privacy Act" by releasing
private letters to cast doubt on the credibility of a woman who
accused him of making a sexual advance in the White House.
Katie and her class departed for their trip early
yesterday morning. We heard from her last night and she
sounded about as excited as I have ever heard her. She even
safely negotiated to waters to place a collect call home.
Their will be lots of firsts for her on this trip, not the least
of which will be a couple of half-day )12 hours or better) bus
trips. The schedule is very rigorous and I'm glad I am not
part of the trip, to say the least.
I'll daynote with you again next week. Have
a nice weekend.
