It's getting close to that time, so I once again
started to take a look at our taxes for the year 1999 last
night. I had actually begun to prepare our forms in January,
but then headed off to Daytona and haven't taken the time to delve
back into this woderful project again. Maybe by the end of
the week I will have Turbo Tax ship them off electronically and be
done with it. Since I am getting a small refund I don't mind
filing a little early. If I was having to pay even more
there is no way I would be filing prior to April 15. As it
stands, I detest having given our government a free loan, but
would hate it even more to send the beltway squanderers even more
of my hard earned dollars.
When I filed electronically last year my return
kept being rejected. It turns out I had transposed the
numbers in the kid's social security numbers. When I finally
realized this the return went through smoothly and all were happy
.. except me.
Here's some help from the MoneyGuide
if you're still scratching your head over tax time.

I have to apologize. When I added Monday's
notes I forgot to change the forwarded to this week's page.
I use a very simple page naming concept and with this bit of
information you could have arrived safely at this week's page if
you wanted. My week begins on Sunday, just like an old
fashioned calendar. The notes pages are stored in a
subdirectory named notes and this year's notes are
in yet another subdirectory, 2000. And since
this week began on March 12, this page can be found at: http://www.wakeolda.com/notes/2000/03122000.htm.
I use the scheme of /notes/year/mm/dd/YYYY. More information
than you ever wanted to know about how my sight is designed, I'm
sure.
Some time back I mentioned that some local
Republicans had been up to some very dirty politics in that they
recruited a homeless person to run on the Democratic ticket with
the same name as the incumbent in a move to confuse voters.
The local GOP bunch didn't exactly think the
tactics of one of their own was very funny and last night in a
raucous meeting of the local Republican Party kicked the dudes
out. The put together this resolution which they plan to
send to the local newspapers. Ain't politics great.

Forsyth
County Republican Party Executive Committee
Resolution on Nate Pendley and Jack Daly
WHEREAS,
the Forsyth County Republican Party promotes honesty in politics;
and
WHEREAS,
the Forsyth County Republican Party, abhors dishonesty
in politics, especially when the dishonesty is practiced
by its own members; and
WHEREAS,
Nate Pendley is a member of the Forsyth County
Republican Party, Chairman of the Republican 5th
District and a candidate for the N.C. Senate's 38th
District; and
WHEREAS,
the said Nate Pendley has publicly admitted to his
active involvement in the recruitment of two individuals
to run in the statewide Democratic Primary in May 2000
with the apparent attempt to confuse Democratic voters
with one candidate whose name is similar to the
incumbent State Auditor and the other candidate
potentially positioned to profit from a confused,
unintentional split of votes between the incumbent and
the Pendley-recruited opponent with a similar
name. This action was apparently done to assist
announced Republican candidate for auditor, Jack Daly,
who reportedly delivered the two aforementioned Nare
Pendley inspired candidates' filing papers to the North
Carolina Board of Elections; and
WHEREAS,
the Forsyth County Republican Party Executive Committee
finds grievous error in Nate Pendley's and Jack Daly's
reported tactics to gain a Republican advantage for the
State Auditor's seat in the November General Elections;
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Forsyth County
Republican Party Executive Committee, by motion duly
made, seconded and passed by a majority of members
sufficient to form a quorum, do hereby formally denounce
Nate Pendley's reported actions, call for his
resignation as Chairman of the Republican 5th District
and as a candidate for the N.C. Senate's 38th District
and hereby state that Nate Pendley is no longer in good
standing with the Forsyth County Republican Party.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Forsyth County
Republican Party Executive Committee, by motion duly
made, seconded and passed by a majority of members
sufficient to form a quorum, do hereby formally denounce
Nate Pendley's reported actions, call for his
resignation as a candidate for State Auditor and hereby
state that Jack Daly is no longer in good standing with
the Forsyth County Republican Party.
The Forsyth
County Republican Party Executive Committee further
directed that the Forsyth County Republican Party
Chairman deliver a copy of this resolution to the
Winston-Salem Journal, Kernersville News, Winston-Salem
Chronicle and Clemmons Courier within five days of
passage of this resolution to alert the public that Nate
Pendley's reported actions, and those of Jack Daly, were
not endorsed by the local Republican Party and that the
Forsyth County Republican Party will not tolerate
dishonest political tactics from any source, including
its own members.
Duly
acknowledged, by the Forsyth County Republican Party
Chairman, this the 14th day of March, 2000

I was in attendance at this meeting last night and
it was feisty. One member of the party got so upset by the
resolution that he was asked to leave the meeting when the
chairman ruled him out of order. Several other supporters
followed him out as well. The chairman then proceeded to
call for the question on the motion, which easily passed.
With this, the fireworks were over for the evening.
I should have known something was up when I
received a call on Monday to make sure I was going to be at the
meeting. The last time I received a call to request my
attendance, a dissident group within the party was trying to
overthrow the chairman.
The Winston, the all star race on the NASCAR
Winston Cup circuit is just around the corner. This no holes
barred race is set for May 20 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in
Charlotte.
Officials from Winston and Lowe's Motor Speedway announced
some changes for the event on Tuesday, including word that the
winner's purse has been increased from $200,000 to $500,000.
In addition, the format for this all-star event,
best known for some controversial racing, has a few new
twists. The race will still consist of three segments, two
of 30 laps each and the final 10 lap shootout. A portion of
the field will be inverted between the first two "heats"
and caution laps will not count in any segment.
The Winston Open has been reduced from 50 laps to
20 with the winner also advancing to the Winston. A third
race has been added to the evening's card, the No Bull
Sprint. The sprint will be a 16 lap race with the winner
also transferring to the Winston.
Here is a list of drivers
qualified for The Winston. The field is made of up of
past Winston Cup race winners. The race calls for at least
20 drivers. This year's event will consist of 21 drivers,
including the two that transfer from the Winston Open and the No
Bull Sprint. The

Don't forget to be wearing a bit of the green
tommorrow.
Everyone loves to be Irish, if for just one day
each year. I wonder how the tradition of celebrating St.
Paddy's day began here in the USA? Of course there is better
place to find out than on the St.
Patrick's Day own website. And here is the
legend of St. Patrick's day.
The First round of the NCAA Eastern Regional basketball
tournament is being held in Winston-Salem beginning tomorrow.
However, the press hasn't been very kind to our little town.
Those big city reporters think we're kind of backwards, which
suits me just fine. Maybe that means they will stay away and
leave us to ourselves.

Everyone is Irish
today, so Happy St. Patrick's Day from the O'Tucker family.
I heard in the news this afternoon that Smith
and Wesson had caved into to the White House blackmail.
It's not that I have anything against safety devices for guns, as
the father of two young kids I think gun safety is paramount.
However, I believe in our constitutional right to
bear arms. If you want a house full of guns, then that's you
right. I just hope you are conscious enough to handle your
firearms in a safe manner, which includes protecting curious
little minds from harming themselves.
I am not one who believes our government should
ban or collect all firearms. Simply put, that would just
increase the crime rate. Criminals are going to do criminal
things and making a law that says they can't have guns will only
be another law they will gladly break.
Smith and Wesson was in a catch 22, much like the
tobacco industry. They needed to get the potential threat of
lawsuits out of their way so they could go about their
business. They have a corporation to run, employees to
protect, etc. I wonder if the tactic also protects them
state lawsuits or even lawsuits from individuals or their estates?
However, I think our government has stepped way
over the line when it threatens (maybe not directly) to put
companies or industries out of business unless you do exactly what
I say. That's got to be some sort of blackmail, don't you
think? But then the Clinton Administration gets away with
just about anything it wants, so why should I be surprised that no
one is up in arms (no pun intended there)? As Americans we
have become too passive. Maybe it's because the economy is
go good (although I am starting to wonder if we are heading for a
trip down south) that things are going along so well, that we have
become too passive.
And speaking of our wacky government, what
can they be thinking of when they want to move towards
re-establishing relationships with Iran. Have the kids
running Washington not read their history books? Do they not
remember this evil bunch and the terror they put this country
through when they held our American hostages for, how many years
was it? Get real.
They only reason I could possibly think of for
speaking to this country would to be to grab some of their oil, certainly
not for oriental rugs and caviar.
I predominately use US Airways for my
travel and their threat of a strike at the end of the month by
flight attendants has me more than concerned. In fact, I
have began making alternate plans for my air travel just to be
prepared.
However, I applaud (I am not a US Airways
stockholder) the management team for their convictions to shut
down the airline before caving into the demands of a strike.
Way to go boys.
However, I still remember the pilots strike that
essentially put Eastern Airlines out of business. It was the
same situation for me then as well. I was predominately
flying on Eastern. I just hope that US Airways isn't forced
down that same road. It will be interesting to see how
strong the boys from the board room are when d-day gets a little
closer and they actually have to make good on their threat.
This will send your 56k modem packng.
Ma Bell's boys have
transmitted 3.28 trillion bits of data per second over 300
kilometers of fiber optic cable.
You'll be able to follow
the Oscar's with WindowsMedia.com when the Academy hands
out their prizes on March 26. That is if Roadways Express,
the Los Angeles police and the FBI find the Oscar statue
bandit. It seems the apparent theft
of the prized little statues is only the latest blunder
leading up to this year's Academy Awards presentation. Earlier
there was a snafu
with the ballots when they were put in the third class mail
system, although they were affixed with the prized first class
postage stamp. Must mean this is going to be a weird year at
the Oscar's. Will the favorites win? Will Jennifer
Lopez show up nude after her almost nude appearance at the
Grammy's. Thanks Melvin for emailing the photo of Jennifer
from the music awards!
Some think the future
of Linux may not be in the bid to overtake Windows as a
desktop environment, but is better suited for small, low-cost
appliances.
Suzy and Katie were off to a bowling party
this evening, so it was boys night out for Andrew and Steve.
I asked Andrew where he wanted to go eat and to no one's surprise
he chose Four Way, a little local restaurant with home
cooking. We like to go there and sit at the counter, where
we can banter with the properties (Karen and Fred Scot), the wait
staff and the kitchen. It's like home, where every meal is
prepared to order.
And Andrew likes Four Way because they have fried
flounder on the kid's menu. Last summer when we were vacationing
at Holden Beach and were, of course, at a seafood restaurant that
Andrew announced he wanted to order flounder. We never
thought he would eat it, but he surprised us. Since then he
almost always order flounder when we take our place at the Four
Way counter. When Suzy accompanies us there we're relegated
to a booth.
Katie has a friend from school sleeping over
tonight also, so I am sure Andrew will be showing off for the new
audience. I expect to hear, "tell Andrew to stay out of
my room" at any minute now.

I hope you made it through the wearing of the
green yesterday. I was pinched 'nary once. I hope you
fared as well.
Here's a scary thought for those of us brave
enough to buy anything and everything over the internet. The
feds
claim to have put the clamps on some foreign hacker who they
allege stole more than 485,000 credit-card numbers. And talk
about brave, supposedly the alleged perp stored the stolen credit
card numbers on a U.S. government agency's Web site.
I received this entry in the Wakeolda guestbook
from <mmoerk@frii.com>
regarding the photos I posted when visiting Mt. Evans last
year. I have driven up the mountain on two seperate trip to
Colorado and was pleased that I may have inspired someone who is
just an afternoon's drive away to head to the hills.
However, I would wait until the "spring" thaw before
heading to the summit. Heck, you the road may be closed this
time of year.
Enjoyed your site. Was searching for
info on the Mt. Evans Highway, and after seeing your pictures
and reading your description, you've convinced me that I need to
go see it for myself!
