I am finally getting a minute to look at my the
website since I returned from Las Vegas on Monday. I was
wiped out Monday and then yesterday NHRA Winston Drag Racing Pro
Stock driver Mark Pawuk was in town, so we had dinner together and
there was no time when we returned home.
As for my trip to Vegas, I spent more time at the
"tables" than I ever have in the past. I have been
using the computer to attempt to learn to play blackjack and
pressed my new skills into play while in sin city. I played
21 for 10 or 12 hours and only left about a $200 entertainment fee
in Nevada. I thought I came out the winner, had a heck of a
good time and didn't have to mortgage the house. One of the
things that made this trip so enjoyable was a couple of friends
from Chicago were also there. We had dinner, went to the
race track and terrorized the casinos together.
One of the highlights of the trip was the
opportunity to attend a super welterweight championship
fight. For me this will be a rare opportunity. I am
not one who sits in front of the tube and watches fights on a regular
basis, but I have watched some of the bigger bouts. I
remember when Muhammad Ali's name was Cassius Clay! When
given the opportunity to attend the fight I jumped. I then
almost tossed my lunch when I looked at the ticket and the seat
sold for $800. Luckily, it was given to me. It was a
great seat. I was in the second row of the bleachers at the
middle of the ring. Only the floor seats were in front of us
and I think I seat was better because we were elevated and could
see what was going on in the ring.
I took in the entire evening, getting in my seat
at about 5 PM and watching four bouts, including one where two
women squared off. The evening culminated with the super
welterweight championship bout between David Reid (champ) and
challenger Felix Trinidad. Early in the fight it looked like
Reid had the upper hand, but Trinidad came back and beat the socks
off Reid. I thought Reid was going to be knocked out in the
11th round and in fact was knocked down a couple of times, but
came back strong. Trinidad
won the belt on a close unanimous decision.
At the race track, it was another successful Winston
No Bull 5 weekend. Jeff Burton won his third Winston $1
million bonus when he was flagged the winner in the rain shortened
event. This is the first time there have been back to back
winners in the Winston bonus. The next Winston No Bull 5
event will be at the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in
Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend. Jeff Burton, Tony
Stewart, Mark Martin Bill Elliott and Bobby Labonte will have a
shot at the megabucks payoff in Charlotte.
A race fan also won $1 Million when Burton was
named the winner.

Andrew and I have just returned from Charlotte,
where we took in two days of the Atlantic Coast Conference
basketball tournament. Five games in two days. That
ought to fill our basketball need for some time.
We happened on the tickets on the last
minute. One of the guys in our office has two tournament
books and wasn't going to be able to make it. He offered the
tickets to me and I gladly accepted. I shared the Thursday
and Sunday tickets with a co-worker, grabbed Andrew and took off
to Charlotte.
The first game we saw was Wake Forest vs. North
Carolina. It was a great game with the Deacons beating the
Tar Heels, 58-52. It's just as well that we were able to
enjoy the games....the guy that gave me the tickets is a die-hard
North Carolina fan. He wouldn't have fared well at this
game. Maryland was clobbering Florida State in the second
game, so Andrew and I headed to check into our hotel. It was
then back to the Charlotte Coliseum to watch Virginia and North
Carolina State. State, the underdog, won this one, 76-65.
In Saturday's first game it was going to be Duke
vs. Wake Forest and Wake was a huge underdog in this game.
The Deacons were able to hang with Duke until late in the second
half, when Duke marched on to a 82-73 win. After this game,
Andrew and I decided it was time to head back to Winston-Salem.
We got to the coliseum early on Saturday to check
out the ACC pavilion. The pavilion was full of interactive
games for the kids and Andrew spent much of the morning, shooting
basketball, playing putt putt golf, trying his luck at a
one-on-one slam dunk and challenging the Chick-Fila cows.
After about two hours in this huge tent, it was off to game where
we could show our support for Wake. The Wake Forest campus
in less than a mile from our house.
