I've had a casualty with one of my systems.
My original Windows NT server system now sits in the
kitchen. It's my original Pentium system and is proud to own
a blazing 90 MHz processor. This system is a convenient
system. It rests right beside our kitchen table and everyone
uses this box to check their mail, create word documents, check
stock prices and weather and otherwise surf the internet.
You can check you mail when you first come down in the morning or
when you walk in the door from work. It's Fred on the
network and has a very small hard drive. It's main purpose
in life, other than what I have just outlined, is to work as a
backup domain controller.
When I came home the other day I noticed the
screen was black. I thought the screen saver had kicked in
and blanked the screen and when it didn't come to life after a
mouse movement or tap of the space bar I went for the reset
button. Still nothing.
Suzy said we had a power surge Friday morning, so
I have now deduced this monitor either took a spike, got tired and
gave up or the video card in the Fred has failed. I haven't
checked the machine out yet, but I plan to take an old monitor
upstairs and start there.
Funny thing is, for years we had an old 15"
monitor that you could hardly see, but had no problems. I
recently put this 17" monitor on Fred and bam, it's
dead. Maybe I should have kept that piece of crap monitor up
there.
Looks like the barbs are heating up between
the Speedway Motorsports and the International Speedway
boys. These two companies own the majority of Winston Cup
race tracks. Speedway Motrosports mentioned last week they
were considering dropping their ticket prices and creating a Fans
First campaign.
Jim Hunter, who is the President of Darlington
Raceway and oversees the North Carolina and Richmond facilities
for International Speedway Corp. as well, fired
this shot back over the weekend. If you remember, Bruton
Smith and NASCAR's Brian France got into a battle of words
relative to the future of the sport earlier this year.
Hunter was also trying to put
to rest a story that's been floating around for a while that
places like Darlington and Rockingham will lose events as newer
and bigger facilities are being built.
I received this note from Jeff Timm [gcjtimm@earthlink.net]
in response to my mention yesterday that NASCAR might consider a
standardized body style.
Given all the NASCAR rules, they
might as well merge with the IRL and run formula cars.
We all know the "Stock
Car" is dead. It's just a full race chassis with sheet
metal around it and a name on it.
I've been waiting for some team to
label it's car "Packard."
Jeff Timm
Who thinks NASCAR should run under
Showroom Stock rules (the original ones hopefully) Who ran
autocross in a 1980 Dodge Colt RS (I missed the turbo version by
1 year darn it!)
I hope NASCAR remembers where it came
from. I realize that under those Chevy Dodge and Ford
skins, the race cars are all the same, but they sort of look
like the cars you and drive to work on Monday. For years
car manufacturers have said, "win on Sunday, sell on
Monday."

If you've been waiting to upgrade your processor,
now might be time. Intel has announced it's cutting
prices on processors by as much as 25 percent. This
usually means a new round of better and faster processors is about
to hit the market. And memory
prices are continuing fall as well.
I think I may have screwed up our concrete driveway
this winter. When we had that lingering snow and ice in
January, I finally went out and applied some snow melt. Now
the concrete is flaking apart. In December I had a nice and
smooth concrete driveway and now it looks like our concrete pad
has a major acne case. It hasn't exactly made the
skateboarder who lives here a happy camper either.

I made it to Las Vegas yesterday
around 2 PM. Ah, the joys of flying of the company plane, a
Gulfstream G IV in this case. You don’t have to hassle with
airports and the plane pretty much leaves and takes off on YOUR
schedule.
We’re staying at Caesar’s Palace and
after we attempted to check in I headed off to my favorite fast
food restaurant of the West. There is a hamburger chain located
here and in Southern California, In and Out, that makes absolutely
the best hamburger you will ever get from a drive thru joint. I
had made a pact with myself that I would splurge from my diet to
enjoy an In and Out burger, but I was somewhat good in that I
didn’t eat the accompanying fries. And then for dinner it was
off to the Japanese Restaurant and the sushi bar. Don’t think I
harmed myself too much there.
When I come to the West Coast I attempt to
stay up just as late as I can on the first night in a feeble
attempt to adjust my body to the new time zone. It usually takes
me two or three days to get totally adjusted. I was successful in
my attempt to stay up late last night, finally hitting the rack
about 1 AM this morning, which meant that I was up just shy of 24
hours. I didn’t have any problem falling asleep. However, before
I knew it I was awake at 4 AM. That means just 3.something hours
sleep and I need more. I attempted to go back to sleep and finally
said the hell with it and got up about 6 AM. I am sure I will be
paying this evening.
I rode by the site if the newest NASCAR Café,
which is set for it’s grand opening today here in Las Vegas and
it looks like they’re going to have their hands full today. The
place was still loaded with heavy construction equipment which was
busy planting trees and such in the front of the joint.
Everything here in Vegas is gawdy
and overdone and this latest of the racing themed restaurants is
no different. And they have competition not too far away. The
NASCAR Café is at the Sahara hotel and its competitor is only a
couple of miles away in the downtown Freemont street area. I took
a stroll through the Race Rock and it’s loaded with NASCAR race
cars, driver uniforms and photos from all forms of motorsports. A
gear head’s heavan.
I was talking with a cab driver last night
and quizzed him as to what was happening in Vegas this week. We
getting ready for the big race this weekend he said. "That
NASCAR crowd is a party crowd and they keep moving day and night.
It’ll be good weekend for me," was his response. I further
asked him about "the big computer show", to which he
grumbled the town was full when Comdex comes here, but those
people are in by 10 at night.
You can imagine my concern over the
latest round of school violence as we have one child in middle
school (6th grade) and another in the second grade.
It’s almost beyond my comprehension how some six year old child
would have the wherewithal to pack a gun into his bookbag and then
pull it out in class to settle a playground score. I’d say the
problem there began in the gun toter’s home.
I am not trying to start a gun debate here.
I believe we should abide by our constitution, which gives every
American the right to bear arms, but at the same time I believe
something is bad wrong in this kid’s home. I think many of the
problems society is facing today is because the lack of parenting
at home.
I use the Atomz search service for Wakeolda
and I just got an email from them allowing that the search of
Wakeolda had exceeded the 500 page limit of their free service.
It’s hard to believe that I might have saved 500 pages on this
site
