Happy Anniversary, Suzy.
Wake Forest University was selected as one of
three sites last week for a presidential debate this fall.
Wait Chapel, which seats about 2000 people, located in the heart
of the Wake Forest campus, will be the return site for the debate,
set for Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. It's a repeat performance for WFU.
Wake Forest had its first presidential debate in the year we moved
to Winston-Salem when George Busch and Michael Dukakis squared
off. It was a big deal then and I am sure it will be even
bigger in 2000. Wait Chapel has been air conditioned and the
campus "wired" since the last debate in Winston-Salem.
I find it ironic that one of the reasons Wake was
selected for a repeat performance was it one of the most wired
college campuses in the country. It's true that WFU took the
technology high road a few years back when it wired all of its facilitates.
The college raised tuition and now presents every student with an
IBM notebook. The ironic part is that I live less than 2
miles from the campus and can't get a wide pipe to the internet.
Whine. Whine. Whine.

Forest press release on the high honor of being named as one
of the 2000 presidential debate sites.
I INSTALLED TURBO TAX yesterday, fired up
the program and imported my data from last year and promptly shut
the program down. I usually leave my taxes until the last
minute, read that I have to give my rich Uncle Sam a little
stipend in April, but I thought I would at least get the software
going earlier this year. Maybe I will input some of the data
as it arrives. Don't bet on it. I also have been
looking through my Quicken data to pick out the pieces that I will
need to use for my filing.
This will give me something to gripe about from
now until April 15.
AS I WAS FLIPPING thorough the television
channels last night I caught a few minutes of the Al Gore--Bill
Bradley debate from Iowa. Mr. Gore still appears as Plastic
Man to me. However, as I watched him for the few minutes I
did, it looked like he had been watching some tapes of Ronald
Reagan. Many of Gore's gestures seemed to mimic Mr.
Reagan. He still gave empty answers to the questions while
Mr. Bradley's answres were informative and included well
defined thoughts. Mr. Gore seemed to want to personalize his
answers. As a good republican, I should be hoping that
Gore wins the Democratic nomination. Bradley would be a much
tougher opponent for us Republicans. Here the election is
still almost a year away and I'm talking about it like it's next
week.

Bob Thompson asked me tonight if I got Suzy that
spindle of CD-R's for her anniversary like I considered. I
wimped out and got her a bottle of that expensive Shalimar cologne
she likes. That is always a winner.
I don't know how you are about old wives tales,
but we heard thunder at 5 AM today and there is a saying that if
you have thunder in the winter, you'll have snow within seven to
10 days. We don't get much snow around here, so it would be
very nice to have a couple of inches over the weekend so Andrew
can check out his new snowboard. And I'm off on Monday and
the kids are out of school for Martin Luther King's birthday
celebration. A quick
look at the Weather Channel's site, however, doesn't give us
much hope for snow. We need a good N'Easter so we can put
the board into action.
Jan Swijsen [sjon@svenson.com]
sheds some light on the note I posted last week on Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Gates' charity efforts:
Donations to charity are deductible
from your taxes I guess (in Belgium they
are). If he can subtract that from his paycheque, he probably
ends up with a negative pay. Poor bloke.
I think you're on to something my
friend. I am sure Bill saw GREAT benefit from his
generosity. Americans are always looking for that extra
tax deduction at the end of the year, myself included.

Winston and NASCAR today announced a huge increase
in the NASCAR Winston Cup point fund to $10 million for
2000. The next Winston Champ will get at least $3 Million
form the kitty and for the first time the runner up will get at
least $1 million. And you think the competition on the track
has been thought before.
I think I may have mentioned TIVO before, so I
guess this may be their competition. Replay
TV has an offering that may do away with your VCR.
Replay records your favorite television programs to a hard disk
and seems to be smart about doing it. They claim you can set
the system up so there is always something you like available on
the set top box's hard drive.
Our condolences to Darrell and Michael Waltrip.
Their father, LeRoy, passed away earlier this week about a long
cancer illness. I remember when Darrell was in his prime
that LeRoy was a constant fixture at the race track. LeROy
loved watching his sons race and playing golf.
Dale Earnhardt may not be able to participate in
this year's Winston Cup Preview. Big E is recuperating from
back surgery at the close of the season.

It was confirmed last night that Dale Earnhardt, will
indeed not be able to attend this year's T. Wayne Robertson
Winston Cup Preview set for Saturday in Winston-Salem.
There is a new twist to the preview this
year. Fans will be able to get
an armband to gain entry into their favorite driver's section
beginning just after midnight Friday night, which actually makes
it Saturday morning. In the past fans had lined up in the
wee hours of the morning for a chance to get the arm band which guaranteed
admission into their favorite driver's section. Each
driver's section is limited to the first 400 fans and each of
those fans is guaranteed an autograph.
Here is a list of the Winston
Cup drivers scheduled to appear at Saturday's preview.
HERE'S A SITE THAT will allow you to test
the speed of your internet connection. It runs a java script
with several sample download sizes that measures the speed of a
download to your computer and reports the speed back in
Mbps. I chose the 200 K test and telus.net reported the
following statistics:
Starting download test
Http request: http://speedtest.mybc.com/200kbyte.test
Http connection opened in 0 milliseconds
Test performed in 26312 milliseconds
Total bytes downloaded: 204800 bytes
Throughput: 0.059383553 Mbps |
JUST IN CASE YOU THOUGHT the folks at
amazon.com hadn't been busy over the holidays, CBS Marketwatch
reports that Mr. Bezos and company accounted
for much of the e-commerce during the fourth quarter of
1999.

There is a way to get Windows 2000 before the
February Microsoft release date. Major manufacturers will
begin shipping new PCs with Windows 2000 on January 24, three
weeks before the official announcement. Believe it or not, I
can wait.
I guess I screwed up the other day when I
mentioned a site that would test your download speed and didn't include
a hyperlink for the site. Thanks to J.H. Ricketson [culam@neteze.com]
for letting me know. I have also gone back fixed my notes
for Wednesday to include the hyperlink.
What is the URL for the site that
tests your browser's DL speed? (I couldn't find anything to
click on.) TIA
Try this link: http://speedtest.mybc.com/.
Sorry about that!
